Jacques HEROLD (1910-1987). Born in Romanian Moldavia, Herold is an important Romanian surrealist painter and sculptor. He enters the Fine Arts school of Bucharest in 1927 but rejects academic art. Dreaming of Paris, Herold moves to the French capital in 1930 to pursue his series ‘Germination’ and ‘Crystallization’, based on the metamorphosis of vegetation and the organics effects of the subconscious mind. Being an illegal immigrant, he encounters a number of financial and professional difficulties, even as Brancusi’s assistant. He joins the surrealists in 1934, but his lyrical abstractions are not appreciated by all. He continues to paint the essence of the organic, thickly layering material, while stripping flesh from people, objects, even the sky. Recognized by André Breton only in 1938, Herold still has to wait for the end of the war and 1947 before he can exhibit in International Surrealist Exhibitions. He is then internationally recognized and continuously exhibits in major museums and fairs until his death.
