Marcel JANCO (1895-1984). Born in Bucharest from Jewish Romanian parents, Janco was one of the outstanding and principal creators of Dada and modern art. The first big war led him towards peaceful Zurich where he co-founded Dada art in 1916. After the war, Janco went to France to reconstruct bombarded houses and briefly worked with the cubist Section d’Or in Paris. He then moved back to Romania where he transformed the urban image of Bucharest with his functionalist villas (Art Deco-Bauhaus). With the rise of anti-Semitism and the Second World War, he immigrated to Israel. Marcel Janco’s works cover a range of avant-garde movements of the 20th century, such as Dada, Cubism and Constructivism, as well as Abstract Expressionism. As a painter, sculptor and architect, he is a pioneer in Modern Art.
